THEY DRIVE BACK TO the office under a cloud of gloom, brooding over the loss of a prime suspect. Jamie sits in the back, defeated, staring out the window into the darkness. Mislan debates calling Superintendent Samsiah to update her and seek her assistance in getting the wreck handed over to Kuala Lumpur police. He looks at the dashboard clock. It is 2:25 a.m., and he decides to leave it for a more decent hour. He knows he had the right suspect. He’s confident he’s on the right track. However, he doesn’t know the suspect’s link to the murders. As they ride the elevator to the office, he tells Johan to take Jamie to one of the interview rooms and get Syed or Jeff to watch over her.

“Get her some coffee and something to eat. I need to have a wash.”

He takes a clean shirt and a face towel from his backpack and goes to the restroom. While washing, he ponders the link between the dead suspect and his victims. He’s convinced the suspect knew one of the victims, if not both. That’s the only reason his prints are in the car. Was he with them that night? His prints suggest only that he was in the car at some point, but was he in the car when they were killed? Mislan sighs.

He walks back to the office to find Johan sitting at his desk with two coffees.

“Jo, about the bullet hole in the door, can you get a workshop to patch it up?”

“Are you not reporting it?”

“No, just patch it up and get it resprayed. I don’t want to complicate the situation more.” He sips his coffee, “The MPV crew, didn’t they see our car coming through? Hell! If they had aimed a few inches higher, they would’ve hit the window, and probably me.” He lights a cigarette, shaking his head. “I could have been seriously injured or dead,” he says and smiles.

“That would make many people happy,” Johan says with a chuckle. “I suppose they were shooting for the tires, but you know how it is in real life. Still, you should count your blessings. If those patrolmen were worse shots than they were, we wouldn’t be chatting here.”

“I suppose so. Jo, don’t forget the car. Get it done before someone notices it.”

“I’ll see to it first thing tomorrow.”

“Where’s Jamie?”

“Room one, Syed is with her. What’s next?”

“I’ve been thinking. I believe our vics, at least one of them, knew the suspect. We need to find out their relationship.”

“What makes you say that?”

“How else would the suspect’s prints be in the car? They’re lifted from the central locking and the automatic window opener. The suspect had to be in the car recently. Otherwise, the print would have been smeared or superimposed by Mahadi’s. He had to be the last person to touch the buttons immediately after they were killed.”

The officers ponder in silence.

“The other thing that puzzles me is, why were the vics at the petrol station in Jalan Jelatek? It’s off their route.
